Mariposa County Unified School District
School Bus Drivers Wanted
Mariposa County Unified School District is recruiting School Bus Drivers. Driving a school bus is much different from driving a car or a truck. Special skills and judgments are necessary. To become a school bus driver, you must know many things about the pupil transportation system in California and about the plan that has been devised in California to ensure safe transportation of pupils. The school bus driver course that you will be required to take was prepared especially for school bus drivers, not for truck drivers or automobile drivers. Through this course you will become a professional driver. Upon successful completion of both the classroom and behind-the-wheel training course, you will be prepared to take the state-required examinations necessary to obtain the California Special Driver’s Certificate which is required to drive a school bus.
The course requirements are a minimum of 40 hours of instruction. The 40 hours is broken down to a minimum of 20 hours of classroom training and a minimum of 20 hours of Behind-the-wheel training.
You will need to obtain a Class B commercial license permit from the DMV. This requires written tests on general knowledge for both regular & commercial driver, air brakes and passenger endorsement. You also must complete a commercial driver’s physical. The cost of a driver physical is usually between $100 and $125 depending upon the physician. The DMV fee for a Class B commercial license permit is $67.
Upon completion of the course, you will be required to pass a written and driving test with the California Highway Patrol. The CHP process is to complete a Certificate Application Form, turn in an H-6 from the DMV (10 year driving history), turn in a completed DMV DL-51 Physical Form and be fingerprinted for a criminal background check. When that is complete, they will administer the written and driving tests. You will also be required to pass a written test on First Aide. CHP fees are $57.
When you have obtained your Special Certificate to drive a school bus, you will need to apply with Mariposa County Unified School District for employment. MCUSD also requires that you be fingerprinted for a criminal background check (no fee required). They also require a TB Test and a Pre-employment Drug test. Most school bus driving positions at MCUSD are between 4 and 6 hours with a few driving positions at 7 to 8 hours. Salary for drivers is at Range 19.
