Welcome to Program Improvement

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires the California Department of Education to annually review student academic performance in English/Language Arts and Mathematics of each district that receives Title I, Part A, funding. A district is identified as Program Improvement (PI) if yearly student performance goals, known as Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), are not met for two consecutive years.

According to the guidelines of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), the Mariposa County Unified School District has been identified as a Program Improvement Local Educational Agency in Year 3, corrective action.

In compliance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), a federal law, students residing in and attending a Title I school identified as a Program Improvement (PI) school will be notified and provided an opportunity to apply to attend a designated non-program improvement school in the district, and transportation will be provided within district guidelines.

Please call your current school or the Curriculum and Instruction Office for more specific information about your school. It is important to note that this is a year-by-year program with limited funding. When a Program Improvement (PI) school meets its Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) achievement targets two years in a row, students enrolled at a non-program improvement school will no longer be eligible for transportation. They may continue to attend the school until the highest grade level, but transportation will cease.

Supplemental Education Services (SES)

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001 enables parents to select supplemental educational services for their children.

Supplemental educational services (SES) are additional academic instruction provided outside of the regular school day and designed to increase the academic achievement of students attending schools in Program Improvement (PI) Years 2 through 5. SES, or free tutoring, must be high quality, research based, and specifically designed to increase student academic achievement. Eligible students are all low-income students who attend Title I PI Years 2 through 5 schools.

Students who attend a Title I school that has been in Program Improvement for two years or more may be eligible to receive supplemental educational services or free tutoring. Supplemental educational services (e.g., after-school tutoring) are provided at schools to assist students in meeting state standards. As a result of limited funding, the lowest-achieving students from low-income families are given priority for receiving supplemental services.
